How to Choose a Meat Delivery Service: 7 Things to Compare Before You Order

Last Verified:

Whether you’re stocking the freezer, planning a steak dinner or buying a gift, a meat delivery order needs to suit your household and budget. These seven checks will help you decide what’s worth buying.

We’re using examples from Good Ranchers and Chicago Steak Company, two businesses on One Bison that we’re glad to support. Good Ranchers’ focus on American farms matters to us, while Chicago Steak Company offers Midwestern beef with a choice of grades and aging styles.

Good Ranchers is also a paid Founding Partner whose sponsorship helps fund One Bison.

1. Will you use what’s in the box?

Start with the cuts, portion weights and number of meals you expect to make. A large box isn’t good value if it includes meat your family won’t eat. Check whether you can choose the contents, how portions are packed and whether you have enough freezer space.

For regular dinners, choose meat you already enjoy cooking. For a gift, think about the recipient’s favorite cuts and when they’ll be home to receive it.

2. Where does the meat come from?

Buying from an American company doesn’t, by itself, tell you where its meat was raised. Look for clear sourcing information for the product you’re considering.

The debate over beef imports shows why this matters. In February 2026, the U.S. expanded lower-tariff access for 80,000 additional metric tons of Argentine lean beef trimmings, used in ground beef, for that year. An August measure allowed a further 300,000 metric tons of lean beef trimmings for eligible “other countries or areas” from September through November. The White House’s stated aim was more affordable ground beef. The American Farm Bureau Federation has warned that expanded imports could weaken cattle prices and discourage investment in rebuilding U.S. herds.

To support American ranchers with your purchase, look for U.S.-raised meat. Good Ranchers says its Cowboy Box beef is born, raised and harvested in the United States. Chicago Steak Company says its steaks come from Midwestern-raised cattle.

3. What is the total cost?

Compare the delivered price with similar cuts and quantities at your grocery store or butcher. Include shipping and taxes, and account for grade, portion size and whether the cuts contain bones.

Box Listed price What’s included
Good Ranchers
Cowboy Box
$349 one-time
$279.20 per subscription box
12 steaks and 8 burger patties; about 10.2 lb, including bone-in cuts
Chicago Steak Company
Chicago’s Best Seller
$269.95 sale price
One-time order
8 Premium Angus Choice steaks; 4 lb

The boxes contain different cuts and quantities, so their prices aren’t directly comparable. The weights above total the listed portions, include bones where applicable and exclude promotional extras.

4. Is it a one-time order or a subscription?

Before subscribing, check how often you’ll be charged, how to skip a delivery and when changes must be made. A discount only helps if the deliveries suit you.

Good Ranchers offers both options. Its terms say to cancel before the next billing date; a later cancellation may stop future boxes rather than the one already charged. For any seller, check the change and cancellation deadlines, especially around holidays.

5. What grade of beef are you buying?

USDA describes Prime as having abundant marbling, the fat within the meat; Choice has less marbling but is still high quality, while Select is generally leaner.

Check the particular box rather than relying on the brand’s general description. Chicago’s Best Seller contains Premium Angus Choice steaks, even though Chicago Steak Company also offers Prime.

6. Do you prefer wet-aged or dry-aged steaks?

This matters more for a steak dinner than a mixed box of chicken, pork and burgers. Aging can improve tenderness. Wet-aged beef is refrigerated in vacuum-sealed packaging; dry-aged beef is exposed to air in controlled, refrigerated conditions and develops a distinct flavor. Choose what you enjoy, rather than assuming the more expensive option will suit you better.

7. How will delivery and any problems be handled?

Confirm delivery to your address and leave time for processing. Good Ranchers advertises free express shipping with Subscribe & Save; check the charge for your chosen order. Chicago Steak Company says it cannot ship the same day and warns that holiday delivery dates are not guaranteed.

Find out how to report a problem. Good Ranchers asks for damage reports and photos within seven days of receipt. Chicago Steak Company’s guarantee covers condition for up to eight hours after delivery and allows limits on refunds and replacements. Report problems promptly and follow the temperature checks below.

When the box arrives, open it immediately. USDA says perishable food should arrive frozen, partly frozen with ice crystals, or refrigerator-cold below 40°F, measured with a food thermometer. If it arrives above 40°F, don’t eat or taste it; notify the seller. Refrigerate or freeze safely cold meat promptly.
